ARCHITECTURAL SCULPTURE

SCULPTURAL ARCHITECTURE

AS AN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT BUILDINGS, SCULPTURES AND FLYING FACINATED ME STARTING FROM MY UNIVERSITY YEARS IN 1950 S AND BEYOND.

ARCHITECTURE IS A CLOSE RELATIVE OF CONSTRUCTIVISTIC SCULPTURES. IN ADDITION I WANT MY SCULPTURES TO EXPRESS THE IDEA OF FLYING MOVEMENT. AS A YOUNG ARCHITECT I USED TO SUPPLEMENT MY BUILDINGS WITH SOME KIND OF SCULPTURE OR RELIEF.

I MOSTLY USED PLYWOOD SHEETS, BOARD AND PAINT. LATER, WORKING AS CITY ARCHITECT OF VAASA FINLAND, I HAD TO DEFENSE ARCHITECTURE AGAINST TYPICAL OPINIONS OF THAT TIME AND THE NARROWMINDED ECONOMIC-TECHNICAL NORMS. FOR THE POLITICIANS, THE LOW PRIZE STRUCTURE WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE AESTHETIC VALUES. SO THE COMMUNAL BUILDINGS SCHOOLS, KINDERGARTENS ETC. WERE PLANNED MINIMALISTICALLY WITH NO EXTRA CORNERS OR SQUARE FEET.

SO, MY IDEA WAS TO GET SOME ARCHITECTURAL SCULPTURES ADDED TO THE PROJECTS WHICH MISSED THE PART OF THE SCULPTURAL ELEMENT OF ARCHITECTURE. AT TIMES, MY EFFORTS WERE SUCCESSFUL. A SCULPTURE EXPRESSING THE SPIRIT OF THE BUILDING, PLACED AT THE RIGHT SPOT, CAN UNIFY THE FEELING OF THE SPACE. DURING MY CAREER I CREATED THIS TYPE OF ARTWORK TO APPROXIMATELY TEN OF MY BUILDING PROJECTS.

DURING 1990ıS I LEARNED TO WELD METAL, SO THE MATERIAL OF MY SCULPTURES CHANGED. MY FAVORITE MATERIAL, CORNER STEEL, DOESNıT ALLOW MUCH USE OF CURVED FORMS. MY PIECES FIND THEIR FORMS ALREADY AT THE DRAFT STAGE BY MEANS OF BUILDING THEM, NOT BY MEANS OF PREPARING CLAY MODELS TO BE LATER COPIED ON STEEL.

AS MATERIAL CORNERSTEEL HAS SOME BENEFITS: A SMALL SCULPTURE CAN BE RE-SCALED TO MONUMENTAL DIMENSIONS BY USING THE STANDARD STEEL STRUCTURES OF THE METAL INDUSTRY. IN ADDITION, I LIKE THE SHARP SHADOWS OF THESE SCULPTURES, CONSTANTLY TRANSFORMING BY THE MOVEMENT OF THE SUN.

CURRENTLY I AM ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY CONCENTRATING ON CREATING SCULPTURES, HAVING LEFT THE PLANNING OF BUILDINGS BEHIND. ONE OF MY MAJOR PUBLIC SCULPTURES IS LOCATED IN SPAIN, WHILE THERE IS MANY OTHERS IN FINLAND. DURING THE RECENT YEARS I HAVE FLOWN THOUSANDS OF HOURS WITH GLIDERS AND MOTOR GLIDERS. EVENTHOUGH THE FORMS OF MY SCULPTURES ARE EDGY, IN OPPOSITE TO THE SMOOTH CURVES OF AEROPLANES, MY PERCEPTION OF SPACE HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH AVIATION. BOTH OF THEM HAVE A CLEAR SENSE OF RHYTHM.
